Men's basketball falls to Wayne State in tourney opener in South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The NYIT men's basketball team stumbled on Day 1 of its tournament in South Dakota.

Wayne State (Neb.) defeated the Bears, 78-57, on Saturday at the Sanford Pentagon.

NYIT (2-2) had trailed by four points at halftime, but the deficit swelled to as many as 21 points late in the second half.

Jeffrey Hayden scored 16 points in the defeat, followed by Marcus Saint-Furcy with nine and Domonic Josephs and Tyler Ancrum with eight apiece.

It marked the first-ever meeting between the schools in basketball.

On Day 2 of the event, NYIT faces 25th-ranked Northern State at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday at the Sanford Pentagon.
