SYOSSET, N.Y. — With its conference opener now less than two weeks ago, the NYIT men's tennis team defeated Merrimack, 7-2, Saturday night at Sportime Syosset.

The Bears quickly took command by sweeping the doubles competition.

David Jiang and Maxton Cook at first doubles (8-6), Rafal Charkiewicz and Rares Ispas at second doubles (8-4) and Jaime Salvador and Francisco Caldas at third doubles (8-5) all were victorious.

Charkiewicz, Caldas, Ispas and Kevin Huynh then proceeded to win singles matches.

NYIT improved to 5-0 during the spring season.

"It was a great performance," Ispas said. "Everyone played excellent in doubles. I like how match by match we are becoming more like family, and we are showing our opponents the energy and level we possess.

"After the break we are facing some tough schools in the region, and we also start the ECC competition. So I hope we will perform as well in those matches."
