Freshman Casey Luongo caps four-goal week as women's soccer tops Post, 6-0

WATERBURY, Conn. — Freshman Casey Luongo is a slam dunk for East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week. Actually, ECC Player of the Week may be more fitting.

Luongo tallied two goals for the second straight match and junior Caitlin Appel also scored twice as the NYIT women's soccer team defeated Post, 6-0, on Saturday.

The Bears posted their largest shutout win since defeating Lincoln (Pa.) 7-0 on Oct. 11, 2015.

Luongo had tallied her first two collegiate goals on Thursday to force overtime in what became a 3-2 sudden-death victory against Georgian Court that got the Bears (2-3) in the win column for the season.

"Casey has done everything we have asked of her as a freshman," coach Rachel Reeves said. "We knew she would play a huge role for us coming in, and she is really capitalizing on all of her opportunities, and will continue to do so going forward."

Dina Simonian and Astasia Williams-Bertles also scored Saturday for NYIT against Post (1-5).

Williams-Bertles, who previously played for Dowling College and Lander University, tallied her first NYIT goal.

Simonian, who assisted Taylor Casey's double-OT winner on Thursday, produced the first goal of her senior season. She had tallied eight goals in 2016.

NYIT returns to action next Saturday at President's Stadium when it hosts Mercy in the ECC opener at noon.

"We have really implemented everything that we've gone over in practices in our last two games," Reeves said. "We've got some great momentum going as we head into conference play. We still have some things to work on, but I am confident in our players that we will continue to be competitive."
