FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 26, 2013) - Rookie Melanie Benyadi (Saint Etienne, France) produced a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Andrea Samson of Queens (N.Y.) at fourth singles to clinch the East Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship for NYIT Saturday afternoon at Queens College.
The Bears (14-0) defended their 2012 title with a 5-0 win over the Knights (11-2) and secure a spot in the 2014 NCAA Division II East Regional, which will be played in April.
NYIT took early control of the match by sweeping doubles play. Junior Celia Respaut (Saint Denis, France) and freshman Gabriela Siembab (Chrzanow, Poland) posted an 8-2 win at first doubles. Freshman Claudia Sanchez Gonzalez (Malaga, Spain) and junior Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain) topped Aylin Mehter and Jennifer Fridman 8-2 at second doubles. Doubles action was brought to a close with an 8-4 win at the No. 3 spot by senior Madalina Florea (Galati, Romania) and Benyadi.
The Bears led 3-0 heading into singles play. Burinato quickly brought NYIT to match-point with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Jennifer Fridman at third singles.
