Women's Tennis Tops LIU Post 5-0 in ECC Semifinal
FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2013) - East Coast Conference Rookie of the Year Claudia Sanchez Gonzalez (Malaga, Spain) posted a 6-1, 6-0 singles victory for NYIT at the No. 2 spot to clinch the ECC Semifinal match against LIU Post Friday afternoon at Queens (N.Y.) College.
The Bears (13-0) defeated the Lady Pioneers(4-7) 5-0 to advance to the conference championship final where they will play the winner of the Queens/Dist. Columbia match on Saturday, Oct. 26. First serve is schedule Noon at Queens.
NYIT took an early 2-0 lead after LIU Post had to default third doubles and sixth singles due to an insufficient roster. The Bears then posted an 8-0 triumph at second doubles. Sanchez Gonzalez and Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain) earned the win over Laura Harwell and Amanda Gaimaro. ECC Player of the Year Celia Respaut (Saint Denis, France) and Gabriela Siembab (Chrznow, Poland) then topped Lucie Chrastecka and Heena Kewalramani 8-2 at first doubles.
Leading 4-0, the Bears needed one more point, which came at second singles. NYIT was leading at the four remaining singles spots when the match was called.
