NYIT Women's Tennis Ranked First in ITA East Region Poll

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2013) - The NYIT women's tennis team, coming off its second straight East Coast Conference championship, earned a No. 1 ranking in the East Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, it was announced Monday. 

Two other ECC member institutions, Queens (N.Y.) and District of Columbia, also earned spots in the top 10. The Knights ranked second and the Firebirds are seventh.

Individually, NYIT has five student-athletes ranked regionally in singles action and all three doubles teams ranked as well.

ITA East Region singles champion Celia Respaut (Saint Denis, France) earns the top spot followed by singles runner-up Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain). Claudia Sanchez Gonzalez (Malaga, Spain) rounds out the top three. Melanie Benyadi (Saint Etienne, France) is 11th in the region and Madalina Florea (Galati, Romania) closes out the top 20 tied for 20th.

In doubles, Respaut and partner Gabriela Siembab (Chrzanow, Poland) received a No. 2 ranking. Burinato and Sanchez Gonzalez earned a No. 3 ranking and Florea and Benyadi are No. 8 in the region.

The Bears closed out the fall season with a 14-0 overall record and an 8-0 ECC mark. NYIT returns to action on Sunday, March 2 on the road at Providence College.
