BRONX, N.Y. (April 21, 2014) - The No. 11 NYIT women's tennis team defeated NCAA Division I opponent Fordham University 5-2 Monday afternoon to hand head coach Chris Frusci his combined 100th career victory (Men: 44-27; Women: 56-18).
The Bears brought the regular-season to a close with a 23-5 overall record and will return to action the first weekend in May for the NCAA Division II East Regional. The Rams ended the season 9-9 overall.
NYIT earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. In singles play, Gabriela Siembab (Chrzanow, Poland) made it a 2-0 game for the Bears with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Angelika Dabu at third singles. Melanie Benyadi (Saint Etienne, France) brought NYIT to match-point with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 rally over Julie Leong at fourth doubles before Madalina Florea (Galati, Romania) clinched the victory with a 7-6(4), 6-3 performance at sixth singles.
Justyna Krol (Chrzanow, Poland) registered the final point for NYIT with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 first singles triumph over Elliesa Ball.
