FLUSHING, N.Y. (April 13, 2014) - The No. 11 NYIT women's tennis team rallied for a 4-3 victory over ASA College Sunday afternoon at the US Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The match was clinched by freshman Gabriela Siembab (Chrzanow, Poland) at second singles.
The Bears improved to 21-5 on the season with the win. The Avengers are now 6-3 overall.
ASA claimed a 1-0 lead after doubles action. The Bears prevent the sweep at second doubles where Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain) and Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden) defeated Dayana Agasieva and Diana Perez 8-5.
NYIT quickly knotted the score 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win from Melanie Benyadi (Saint Etienne, France) at fourth singles. The score was tied again 2-2 with Madalina Florea's (Galati, Romania) 6-4, 6-3 sixth singles victory. The final knot came at 3-3 with Borgenhoff's fifth singles triumph of 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-2.
The match was then won by Siembab with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 second singles win over Daniela Yanko.
NYIT returns to action on Saturday, April 19 when it hosts Concordia (N.Y.). First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Tennis Complex in Old Westbury, N.Y.
