Women's tennis tops Adelphi, advances to Round of 16 in NCAA championships

EASTON, Mass. — The NYIT women's tennis team is off to the NCAA Championship's Round of 16.

After receiving a first-round bye, the top-seeded Bears beat Adelphi, 5-2, at Stonehill College on Tuesday to advance to the final rounds in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The women will have company in Florida. The men's team qualified for the Round of 16 on Sunday with a 5-2 win at Chestnut Hill.

On Tuesday, Paulina Velasquez closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Karen Serina at fourth singles.

Lena Dimmer (first singles) and Karolina Pondusova (second singles) also won in straight sets.

NYIT (16-0) next will take on the No. 2 seed from the Central Region, Southeastern Oklahoma, next Wednesday at 8 a.m.
