NYIT volleyball tops Pace, Georgian Court to continue early season success

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — The NYIT volleyball team continued its early season surge Friday, winning four-set matches against Pace and host Georgian Court to improve its record to 5-1.

In the evening match against Georgian Court, the Bears held a 23-19 fourth-set lead and stood two points away from victory. However, the Lions evened the score with four straight points. NYIT then held leads of 24-23, 25-24, 26-25 and 27-26 before finally closing out the match on a kill from Karolina Moderova.

The final: 25-18, 25-17, 17-25, 28-26. Tiffany Verni had 24 kills in the victory, followed by Moderova with 16.

In the earlier match, NYIT defeated Pace, 25-27, 25-18, 25-16, 25-13. Verni had 19 kills, Moderova had 18 and Megan Mannle had 10 in that match.

NYIT remains in Lakewood, N.J., for Saturday matches against New Haven at 10 a.m. and East Stroudsburg at noon.

"We need to play more consistently from one match to the next," coach Gail Wasmus said. "But I'm happy with two wins today."
